Women Entrepreneurship & Empowerment in South Africa

Experts tell us the best way to overcome economic hardships and a high unemployment level is through Entrepreneurship. Are you currently running your own small enterprise or business venture or do you want to learn how to? Many women have now begun to manage their own ventures and small businesses. You may ask yourself what skills are required do this. What standpoint do women have on the labour market of today?

We have an amazing opportunity for you right here!

So what do we do?

How many Entrepreneurship Organizations in South Africa do you know of that actually succeed in supporting women’s initiatives? Things aren’t always simple but ideas still fuel your thoughts and drive you to find a way. It’s in our nature to over-reach. Another problem we have as people is that we want short term results and when we see nothing happen, we crawl back into our shells.

Did you know that only 25% of women consider applying for a bank loan? And 50% of women look for external funding, this is According to the White Paper on Female Entrepreneurship released by FNB. Fortunately there ARE funding programs open to female entrepreneurs ONLY.

As you know conflict is a very common thing and this is another valid issue when supporting women entrepreneurs. Conflict can turn us into survivors, and as breadwinners we have to find a way to support ourselves and our children. Entrepreneurship is a great way to accomplish this, because by empowering women you also give their children opportunity. With a stable income, women are more than likely to ensure proper education for their kids. The long term benefits of this and to South Africa can be enormous.

Women Entrepreneurs play a significant role in the positive growth of their country, and could contribute EVEN MORE. With little assistance and limited resources, women in other remote parts of the world are standing together and doing their part for their nation’s economic reconstruction. This creates jobs and creates a new vessel for growth and prosperity.

VISION & IMPLEMENTATION = ACHIEVEMENT

In this program there is a large amount of fat burning exercises you can choose. Craig Ballantyne explains why he created so many fat loss workout routines…

One of the reasons is to keep your body guessing, and another is to shock the system on a continuous basis! Doing this will boost your metabolism, and keep the fat burning exercises working. The reason programs have to be adjusted on a regular basis, is because our bodies naturally become use to the training, i.e. all of us will eventually reach a plateau. This does not mean the fat burning exercises you are performing aren’t working. It just means your body does not feel the need to progress and burn more fat, because it has reached a level of comfort-ability.

Craig Ballantyne mentions in one of his consumer reports about how your body will stop giving you results after three months of doing the same workout routine. There are a variety of factors such as:

Muscles are too use to the same routine.

Body is no longer in shock the system mode.

You are probably a bit bored and not putting in as much effort.

He also says you need to change your workout program every three to four weeks.

THE PROBLEM MOST PEOPLE HAVE IS SIMPLY THIS…

They don’t know with which program to start. So here are some guidelines for you:

The Best Fat Burning Exercise Program For an Absolute Beginner.

If you are a sedentary person and not use to any real form of physical activity, then you need to start with the Introductory Program in the Turbulence Training Manuel. Don’t start anywhere else but here if you are a beginner, it’s very important. You don’t want to over train and cause overuse injuries in your first view attempts.

The body weight exercises are there to help prepare you for the more advanced workout routines. What ever you do, don’t start with long and intense cardiovascular workouts for instance on a treadmill etc. if you are an overweight person, this is the worst type of training for your body at the time.

The Best Workout Routine For The Professional Weight Lifter Who Has Not Trained For Four Weeks.

If you fall within this range, it is suggested that you start with the intermediate workout program in the Turbulence Training Main Manuel.

IMPORTANT NOTE: For the first week do just one set per workout routine.

Doing this will help you not feel too much “DOMS” which stands for delayed onset muscle soreness, and that occurs when you just start again after a long period of not exercising.

The Best Workout For ADVANCED Fitness and HIGHEST results.

Start with the “ORIGIONAL TURBULENCE TRAINING WORKOUT” in the TT manual, and work your way through each of the following:

If you are a woman that wishes to sculpt the edges of her body to the max, use The Turbulence Training For Women Workout.

If you are a guy that wants to build muscle, use The TT For Muscle Program.

Want to just keep burning off the fat? Then use the DB-BW Fusion Workout.

After you have done one of the above, follow it with The Thirty Day Advanced Fat Loss Program.

And complete the cycle with The Advanced Four Week Fusion Fat Loss Program.

All The Best To YA!!!

Ryan Sandes: Antarctic Ultra-Marathon

Ryan Sandes, who officially describes himself as a “trail runner” has been described in South Africa as “a running phenomenon”. After winning three of the four international desert ultra-marathons – ranked by Time magazine as one of the world’s top endurance competitions – and already leading the fourth marathon well ahead of the pack, he undoubtedly deserves the description.

Ryan running along Hout Bay beach, his home territory

Ryan Sandes

Ryan “Hedgie” Sandes was born in Cape Town on March 10, 1982 and grew up in Hout Bay. He was educated at SACS in Cape Town’s southern suburbs, and played cricket in junior school, rugby later on and also water polo. He then went on to complete a BSc degree in Construction Studies with honours in quantity surveying at the University of Cape Town. But today he rates his occupation as “trail runner”.

Ryan Sandes was, not very long ago considered “a nobody” – in terms of the greater public. But since his incredible 4Desert race victories, he has captured the imagination of people all over the world.

What he has achieved so far is incredible.

Four Deserts

Imagine running through a desert. Depending on the exact location it would not only be unbelievably hot and possibly windy, or unbelievably cold, but the going (that he would have to track) would be completely foreign. Think sand and snow and consider how many people have access to desert regions (or venues with similar conditions) to be able to train adequately. But for those who compete in the 4Deserts recognise the event as the most prestigious outdoor series, and they do find ways to train and do.

Founded in 2002 in Hong Kong as RacingThePlanet, this amazing race – as a whole – is branded, “The hottest, windiest and coldest place on Earth. The Race of No Return.” And certainly those who have bailed out along the way will not be returning any time soon, including Americans Mark Jaget and Ken Perry who both had issues with cold conditions in the Antarctic in the last leg of the 2010 race series.

It really is tough, and remember Ryan has won the first three races hands down.

The four specific deserts in the 4Deserts race are located on different continents and comprise:

the Gobi March in China (first held in 2003),

the Atacama Crossing in Chile (introduced in 2004),

the Sahara Desert in Egypt (2005), and

the Last Desert which is in the Antarctic (inaugurated in 2006).

Each of these races is 250 km long and they take place in six stages over a period of seven days. All competitors must carry their own equipment, food and water for the duration of the entire race. They also have no direct communication with family or friends, but are able to log posts on blogs so that family and friends can keep track of them.

In addition to the four deserts, the competition includes a fifth venue (tagged a roving race) which changes each year. The first, in 2008 was run through the rice terraces in the northwest regions of Vietnam. The second was run through the Fish River Canyon in South Africa and along the Skeleton Coast of Namibia. The third was run this year through the Australian Outback. In 2011 this particular contest will be run in Nepal, India.

The 4Deserts races are not just about running, competing and winning. The mission of the organisers is also to inspire those who compete and provide them with “life enhancing” experiences. They also hope to contribute to improving the lives of “ethnic minorities and tribes” in the areas through which competitors who support the race run.

On their website the organisers state: “The locations we visit are remote, pristine and sparsely populated. Solitude is a highly regarded aspect of our events.”

The First Leg Of The Last Competition

Prior to the last competition in Antarctica, Ryan wrote on his blog: “This race is very different to the other ‘conventional’ desert races I have done and there is a huge unknown element. I suppose I did not know what to expect going into my first race in the Gobi, but then at least I was also an unknown…”

Being “unknown” didn’t last for long given the way he competed. So it was not surprising that, as he says, the “media, contest organisers etc have touted me as one of the favourites to win the ‘Last Desert’, which looking at my past results I must be. But I know anything can happen out there in -30 degree temperatures and I would be a fool to think the competition is in the bag before I have even started it. The ‘Last Desert’ is going to be an experience of a lifetime with some really harsh conditions but I can’t wait for the challenge.”

Ryan training for the ice cold conditions of the Antarctic

Just before the start of the contest he wrote:

“My legs are starting to freshen up and I can feel a spring in them after a two week taper so I am hoping by the time we start the first stage they will be like coiled springs waiting to explode. I have got into the right headspace over the last few days and I am feeling really focused and excited about the challenge ahead. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am going to make the most of it!!”

So his mother certainly wasn’t surprised (although she was delighted) when he jogged in ann hour ahead of his nearest competitor!

Ryan’s achievements

The WOW factor is immense. Ryan won the Gobi and Sahara Desert Races in 2008; he came second in the Namibian Desert Race in 2009 and set a new record after winning the Jungle Marathon is the same year. He also set a new record in the 2010 Atacama Desert Race, and came third in the mixed pairs race in the 2010 Gore-Tex TransAlps Race.

In local races he also did himself proud winning a new record as winner of the Hout Bay Trail Challenge in both 2009 and 2010. He won the Salomen Night Run in 2009 and was placed first in both the morning and evening Salomen Featherbed Trail Challenge in 2010. He also won and set new course records for the 2010 4 Peaks Trail Run, the 2010 Hi-Tec Puffer Ultra Marathon and the 2010 Hout Bay Triple Trouble Marathon.

On top of all of this, he has won:

GoMulti Magazine’s 2008 Trail Runner of the Year

Runners World south Africa Running Hero of 2008

OutThere Magazine’s 2008 Adventurer of the Year runner-up

Runners World South Africa Running Hero of both 2009 and 2010

Men’s Health Magazine’s Best Man Competition 2010 Young Guns Category Winner

Where to from here?

The future

So what does Ryan plan for his future? He is the best person to say”

“After completing the 4Desert Series at the end of this year I would like to give the Ultra Trail Mont Blanc a bash next year. I have realised in order to be competitive at the Mont Blanc I will need to make some adjustments to my training and preparation next year leading up to the Ultra Trail Mont Blanc. I think I will be heading back to run Sani Pass a few times…”

We at SA Trader wish him all the best! Watch this space …

Do you live in the Johannesburg area of South Africa, and are you looking for qualified personal trainers that can help you focus on your specific needs?

OK, So let’s think for a second what you’re needs are in relation to your trainer’s. What are you getting out of the experience and what are they getting out? The basics are simple, you are looking to achieve your fitness goals and they are happy to sign up a new client. The thing about choosing a Good Personal Trainer is that you need to assess the initial interaction and responsiveness to your needs. Then you need to look at how they run their business. For example, if you go to a well known established service provider they would always begin by explaining their terms and make sure you understand what is expected from you and what you can expect from them.

So the same applies in this case, if you’re personal trainer provides you with adequate information, underlying the terms and explaining how your fitness regime will play out and concur with your goals and the time frame you would need to see some results, this is a good trait. Another good trait is when personal trainers explain how bookings are set up and how times need to be allocated for the month to ensure continuous dedication and motivation for achieving the results you want. If you just jump into a routine with a certified trainer, besides promotions and complementary sessions it shows a lack of professionalism, because there is no understanding established, this is a recipe for future arguments with clients that could be avoided if the initial interview is done well and communicated in a way where the client understands what is expected in return for what they expect.

What steps can you take in order to find a qualified professional in Johannesburg?

There are so many personal trainers in Johannesburg and finding one best suited for you isn’t a major challenge because trainers are mostly good with people, but not everyone gets along. The problem is that if you don’t get along with your fitness trainer you could lose the motivation and even the actual idea of hiring a personal trainer. So here are a few pointers before choosing.

Do some research online, find out what they have accomplished for themselves in their chosen profession. This can be sports competitions, higher or continuous fitness qualifications.

When you see a client, ask them about their relationship with their trainer and how it has worked for them. Talk to about three different ones. If you heard about the trainer outside a gym or via advertisement ask them to supply you with about two or three testimonials.

Find out what he or she specializes in.

When you talk in person for the first time, about 95% to 100% eye contact indicates a high interest in your needs. This is a good attribute.

Vusi Thembekwayo’s “black sheep” have nothing to do with nursery rhymes. In fact they don’t have anything to do with sheep either, since these animals follow the flock. Instead Vusi’s black sheep are people who have daring ambition and a persistence that will enable them to achieve.

For them, starting a business or even expanding an existing one, are activities they revel in during recessionary times. But they are more than simply entrepreneurial business people.

As you will find out … NOTHING is impossible!

Vusi Thembekwayo

The Black Sheep

You may have heard the expression “the black sheep in the family”. Like the nursery rhyme (Baa Baa Black Sheep), this has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the concept Vusi Thembekwayo describes. Vusi’s black sheep are people who are calculated risk-takers who look way beyond current circumstances to find new opportunities. They don’t only think outside the box, they DO outside the box.

Vusi describes himself as a black sheep! And this was the title of the talk he gave at the recent Site International Conference held in Cape Town in December 2010.

Vusi Thembekwayo

A black sheep business

Vusi has a financial services business.

But the people the business loans money to are potentially untraceable. So how can you safely lend money to a person who could disa
ppear before they haverepaid the loan? The regular banks simply won’t consider it.

What they have done is to establish a lending system that uses fingerprints for identification. And for surety, they link household furniture and other items to the loan.

Even so, Vusi says, they focus on the “A” client who can afford to repay the loan.

The power of public speaking

Vusi Thembekwayo has been identified as the world’s youngest and most popular speaker. Born in Benoni, Gauteng, this very black Zulu man came third in the English-speaking Union’s Public Speaking in Australia – and won the audience’s favourite speaker prize. He’s entered the competition again, and this time he wants to win.

Success, Vusi told his audience, “does not fall out of a tree. It comes from hard work.” And he knows.

Having grown up in a township, he remembers: “We didn’t have an awful lot, but we believed we could improve ourselves”.

At school, he says, he was considered one of those kids who thought his opinion mattered when no-body else really cared. But when a teacher invited him to participate in a public speaking contest against several other students, he didn’t take the challenge seriously. The topic was What Women Want. He, at a very cocky 15 years of age, hadn’t been close to having a relationship, let alone considered it important to think what women might think was important. Worse still, he didn’t prepare the speech … and he arrived dressed in his regular “Dickies” pants and All Star shoes.

His competitors were, he discovered, all well versed – and extremely well rehearsed – in public speaking. They were also neatly dressed with accessories like ties and belts that he had ignored.

“It was a disaster. I was booed off the stage.”

But even at that young age, he recognised that what had happened was part of a cycle. So he made a deal with his teacher to learn about public speaking. He practised once a week for several years. It paid off, and by the time he was 19, he had a load of competitions under his belt, and was ranked first in Africa.

“If you put your mind to it, success is nothing.

“Black sheep believe in their success long before they achieve it.”

Now public speaking is his “other” job, and this year alone (2010) he has spoken in four of the seven continents.

Vusi Thembekwayo

The definitions of a black sheep

First and foremost, says Vusi, they are always happy.

“They live their lives in the pursuit of something greater than themselves.”

He reminds his audience that this is something Nelson Mandela identifies with.

“Nelson Mandela has said he was happier when he was in prison than when he was president – because he was pursuing a cause.”

Secondly, they have a “loud, daring, unambiguous belief in who they are”. They believe in themselves. It is not enough to ask yourself if you are good enough to do something. The black sheep knows he (or she) is good enough.

Believing that nothing is impossible, they also have the “wisdom” to accept that some things will change. They just get on with it – rather than hanging back saying “I’m not ready yet”.

Black sheep staff and managers

If you want to employ someone who fits 25-year-old Vusi’s defined profile, you won’t be unhappy, because as he says, they have an insatiable hunger to achieve. They also have a vision for themselves.

The managers have a different focus but the same approach. They are people-centric; they have incredibly clear direction skills; and they know what they are worth in business. They also want to succeed.

Personal Training Certifications In South Africa

If you are going to succeed in any type of business or career, you need good training and formal acknowledgement of that training. This is why anyone considering becoming a personal trainer should aim for the best training and certification possible.

There are a huge number of courses that anyone interested in personal training can enrol in. But you need to identify which area of sport science and/or exercise science really interests you. You also need to decide where you want to study – for example at an academy, university, or at home through a long distance learning course.

There are courses that take a year or more, lectures and workshops that are spread over a number of months, as well as shorter courses that focus on specific elements that are important, business aspects for instance. We have identified several excellent options that will help you get to the pinnacle of the personal training field. These include several short courses that will qualify you in the vital realms of:

Health Profile Assessment (HPA), and

Specialised software and economics training to give you the business edge.

The Field of Personal Training

Personal trainers are people who are qualified to help people lose weight, maintain weight and gain weight, depending on their needs. They are also trained to help people maintain a healthy body, and to maximise fitness. While some personal trainers do offer group sessions, the real value of having your own trainer is to build up a relationship of trust with someone who knows how to help you identify and then achieve certain goals in terms of health and fitness. As a trainer in the fitness industry, this is something that you need to fathom right from the start. If you can form good relationships with clients who trust you, you will be successful.

As a qualified and certified personal trainer, you will be expected to help your clients achieve their body fitness and health goals. You may do this in the gym, at a health club, or you might decide to offer personal training sessions in people’s homes, not only helping them work out, but also consulting on nutrition.

Why People need Personal Trainers

The people who use your services will do so for many different reasons ranging from weight loss and muscle strength gain, to achieving top athletic performance, even possibly to lessen stress levels and manage stress, and to give up smoking. So you will see that the scope is really very wide. For this reason many people decide to specialise in one or other field, and become say a sports conditioning coach, a fitness instructor or perhaps a lifestyle consultant.

Whichever particular field of personal training you eventually decide to specialise in, you need to have a good basic grounding in:

forms of exercise

human physiology

biochemistry

endocrinology

dietetics

human psychology

business science and economics.

Decide Where to Focus as a Fitness Professional

The Health Profile Institute (HPI), a global leader in the health and wellness industry, recently (2011) established its first office in South Africa, and announced that it is running both full time and part time courses from October 2011, initially in Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. Detailed information about these courses is available online via our web site.

HPI offers several different courses, and will be adding more in the near future. One that is drawing considerable attention is the Health Profile Assessment (HPA) course – which has become their flagship course in South Africa. A particularly interesting aspect about the HPA is that it applies to various fitness fields. Not only will it increase your knowledge and skills required to be an outstanding and successful personal trainer, but it can also assist you in making a decision in terms of where to focus as a fitness professional working in South Africa. Furthermore, the training will give you the opportunity to become involved in corporate health and in various wellness campaigns.

Probably the most exciting aspect of the HPA program is that it has been designed to equip students with a wide range of skills to add value to the personal training experience.

HPI Certification

The HPI has developed courses based on “competency-based learning” and they use a variety of different assessment methods to ensure that students are in fact qualified to operate in this particular field of expertise.

The certification process has been developed to ensure that students are in fact competent, and have the necessary skills and knowledge required.

Certifications are only awarded once students have completed a range of written tasks, verbal presentations, and practical demonstrations. Students are also required to complete specified group and individual activities during the course, and to participate in workplace simulation.

In the event of any students being assessed as “not yet competent”, the Institute does give them the opportunity to be re-assessed at no extra charge. But if they fail the competency test a second time, additional fees are levied. Furthermore, outstanding assessments have to be completed within a month of the course completion date. Once again this is to ensure that anyone certified by the HPI has the training, knowledge and skills they claim to have.

HPI Certifications

Courses that are available during 2011 include the leading-edge Health Profile Assessment (HPA) course takes a total of 35 hours, and then as long as each student takes to fulfil certification. The program, which was specially designed for the HPI under the direct guidance of the people who created the HPA, covers, amongst other things, basic anatomy and physiology knowledge, as well as computer and math skills. A 14-hour HPA course is also being offered.

HPI is also running courses that focus on healthy weight range assessment, and Plustoo Software training to improve your business skills. HPI Healthy Weigh Range Assessment training introduces students to theoretical and practical aspects of assessing individual healthy weight range and body composition using the skeletal measurement procedure taught during the HPA course. Plustoo is used for both assessment and statistics, enabling trainers to compile fast, easy and reliable results.

Other study possibilities include a focused sub-maximal course that enables students to implement fitness tests in an accurate way, and an economics workshop that focuses on the business value of actively promoting health in the workplace. Above all else, the economics workshop helps students and personal training practitioners focus on the options and activities in the industry that give the best possible return on investment (ROI). In other words what to do within the industry that will help you earn a good income.

In the increasingly competitive world of personal training, it is imperative to attain top qualifications to stand out from your contemporaries. HPI’s Health Profile Assessment program now provides South African fitness trainers with an innovative course that offers this competitive edge …

Information + Innovation = Higher Qualification & More Success!

Traditional body assessments have always been an important part of a personal trainer’s job. However, it is the Swedish-based and internationally renowned Health Profile Institute that has developed an assessment method which is set to change how we view the human body and it’s true potential. The HPI’s ground-breaking Health Profile Assessment (HPA) method utilizes an interdisciplinary approach, strongly based on behavioral medicine combined with international scientific research. The HPA method focuses on the relationship between a client’s health and lifestyle choices while offering an in-depth analysis of their present fitness level and health status. By offering this personal assessment, highlighting problematic areas and providing follow-ups to track a client’s progress, personal trainers and fitness instructors are able to offer a higher level of service and stay a step ahead of other professionals in the health arena.

An All –Inclusive Assessment

The HPA method is based on a 45 minute consultation between the trained specialist and their client whereby a number of individual factors are charted and evaluated. An extensive questionnaire is answered by the client to create awareness about their current physical condition and potential risk factors. Detailed physiological measurements of the client’s skeleton, blood pressure, pulse, height, weight, fat free body mass and estimated healthy weight range (based on the individual’s body frame) are also performed by the specialist. A cardiovascular test to measure a client’s oxygen uptake and fitness status is another part of the HPA experience. This is then followed by a highly personalised evaluation and discussion between client and the trained professional. This is to fully emphasize the connection between an individual’s lifestyle habits and their current health status. A “Desired Health Profile” Form is then given to the client to provide them with an opportunity to set personal goals and take full responsibility for their own health and play an active role in their physical well-being. Last, but by no means least important, is the follow-up after the Health Profile Assessment which offers client and trainer the opportunity to review the results of the tests and measure the clients progress since their last evaluation.

A Perfect Program for Professionals

Within 35 hours spread over 5 days (including certification time) the HPA training course introduces students to all theoretical and practical aspects of performing Health Profile Assessments and furnishes students with a full range of skills to add value to the personal training experience. The principles of communication and active listening are also taught during this comprehensive course which is bound to add value to South African fitness professionals looking for the latest advancements in health and wellness. The program is designed under the strict guidance of the highly specialized creators of the HPA method and meets their highest standards in every regard. Thus, HPA certification can not only benefit fitness trainers and instructors in their current careers but also open doors to lucrative health and wellness campaigns in the corporate sector. A basic understanding of human anatomy and knowledge of physiology as well as computer and mathematical skills are requirements for those who wish to become professional Health Profile Assessors.

So, if you have the basic skill-set and the desire to raise the bar as an expert in the field of health and fitness, contact the Health Profile Institute’s local offices for more information on the HPI Training schedule today. Your career is bound to benefit from the boost that this dynamic course can offer and further cement your position as a personal trainer on top of your game in every way.

The internationally renowned Health Profile Institute recently introduced their innovative Health Profile Assessment course to local personal trainers and fitness instructors looking to offer clients a cutting edge, personalized service and astounding physical results…

Knowledge is Power

Every fitness professional knows that each client is different, with specific training needs. Thus, the key to delivering effective training lies in the depth of knowledge gained about every individual and their unique physique. Nobody understands this better than the globally recognized Health Profile Institute (HPI) who has become synonymous with innovative developments in the health and wellness industry. This world famous company was originally founded in Sweden and now boasts offices in the United States, United Arab Emirates and a recently established South African branch.

What truly sets HPI apart is the development of their ground-breaking Health Profile Assessment (HPA) method which utilizes an interdisciplinary approach, strongly based on behavioural medicine combined with international scientific research. The HPA method focuses on the relationship between a client’s health and lifestyle choices while offering an in-depth analysis of their present fitness level and health status. By offering this profile assessment, highlighting problematic areas and providing follow-ups to track a client’s progress, personal trainers and fitness instructors are able to offer a higher level of service and stay a step ahead in an increasingly competitive industry.

Success is in the Detail

The HPA method is based on a 45 minute consultation between the trained specialist and their client whereby a person’s skeletal structure is measured to identify his or her healthy weight range, fat-free mass, skeletal weight and body fat percentage. Furthermore, their height, current weight and blood pressure is also measured and recorded. Calculating skeletal mass is done by measuring the wrists and knees and is considered more accurate than using a body mass index and even the fat calliper method. HPA also involves a detailed questionnaire, cardiovascular test, an evaluation and discussion and the creation of a personalized “Desired Health Profile” form with detailed goals for clients to work towards. There is also a follow-up to measure a person’s progress since their last HPA and to set new goals for the future. The level of detail acquired from this assessment makes it a powerful tool for South African personal trainers and fitness instructors wanting an extra advantage over contemporaries. Not only can crucial information be garnered about the client’s habits and health to aid their training process, but this method also helps to foster a closer relationship between trainer and client. A further benefit of the HPA method is the ability to scientifically monitor a client’s progress and adjust their exercise program accordingly while also allowing them to measure their own advancement.

Experience The HPA Advantage!

A Cutting Edge Course

Within 35 hours spread over 5 days (including certification time) the HPA training course introduces students to all theoretical and practical aspects of performing Health Profile Assessments and furnishes students with a full range of skills to add value to the personal training experience. The principles of communication and active listening are also taught during this comprehensive course which is bound to add value to South African fitness professionals looking for the latest advancements in health and wellness. So, contact the Health Profile Institute’s local offices for more information on the HPI Training schedule today and take your fitness business to the next level in every way.

Whatever you believe about the Kebble case, it has all the trappings of a Hollywood movie. All the movie-makers have to do is tell it as it happened – according to any of the versions that unwound during the Glenn Agliotti trial. They could also toss in a bit of meat from the Jackie Selebi trial too – and then add a bit of spice from various liquidation applications relating to companies he headed.

In fact a bunch of movie-makers could probably use aspects of the saga and each produce a totally different thriller!

Brett Kebble, Villain Or Hero?

Since some people believe Brett Kebble was a hero and others are convinced he was a down-and-out fraudster, this would be up to the movie-makers to decide. So much has been written about the man, it would be an easy task to cobble together a profile.

What we know for sure is that Kebble was born in Springs, Gauteng in February 1964 and shot to death on September 27, 2005 in Melrose, Johannesburg while driving to a social dinner function. Whether he orchestrated his own killing or was murdered, has not been determined. But nobody has been convicted for the killing. Glen Agliotti was charged with the murder – but acquitted.

A married man with four children, Kebble lived in Noordhoek in the Western Cape. He liked horses and art (part of his personal collection sold for more than R50-million after his death) and he lead a hugely flamboyant lifestyle. Shortly before his death he was described in an article as having a ‘gung-ho, devil-may-care attitude that made the local mining world as exciting as during the heady days of Barney Barnato’.

He is said to have had strong connections with the ANC, and to have had friends in high places – including President Jacob Zuma. Another ally was former police national commissioner and president of Interpol, Jackie Selebe (convicted of corruption in August 2010 and sentenced to 15 years in jail) who admitted unashamedly, during his own trial, that he was a friend of Brett Kebble’s.

A qualified attorney, Kebble (whose father was a mining engineer) had become involved in the mining industry – primarily gold – and had been running several mining related companies until about a month prior to his death. Theories abound on billions of Rands that went ‘missing’ from these companies shortly before his death. He was, in any case, forced to resign from all the companies – JCI, Western Areas and Randgold & Exploration – amid allegations of financial irregularities. Some information emerged in Court records not long after his death that show that more than R2-billion-worth of assets from Randgold & Exploration were sold during his tenure as CEO, and that the proceeds were never reflected in the company. These details are reflected in liquidation applications that were lodged in the Johannesburg Supreme Court in 2006 in an attempt to recover money or trace assets.

Brett Kebble’s Killing

The Kebble killing made headline news, especially when it was discovered that the bullets that killed him were the type used by security guards and assassins. There was also evidence that the ammunition used was of a ‘reduced charge’.

Right from the start the police said there was a possibility that it had been an assassination.

The Glenn Agliotti Connection

It took a while for the cops to arrest Glenn Agliotti in connection with Kebble’s killing. Ironically Agliotti was the State’s main witness in the Jackie Selebi case… and the prosecutors wanted to get that case finished before they got started on the Kebble case.

A convicted drug-dealer who allegedly has very strong links with organised crime and racketeering, Agliotti was eventually charged with one count of murder, one of attempted murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit murder. (The charge sheet included a rather bizarre reference that Agliotti ‘conspired with Brett Kebble … to procure the murder of Brett Kebble’.) Agliotti was further accused of conspiring to kill Alan Gray, auditor Stephen Mildenhall, Jean Daniel Nortier, Dr Mark Bristow and Mark Wellesley Woods.

His trial was the thing that Benjamin Bennett books were made of. A former crime reporter, Bennett transformed the country’s most notable court cases into short stories that were published in book form throughout his life. He would have had a field day with this one!

The Killers

Having been given indemnity from prosecution, the confessed killers of Kebble, three former bouncers, professional boxer Mickey Schultz, Nigel McGurk and Faizel Smith told the Court in great detail what happened on that fateful night. The idea was that they would be able to prove that Agliotti had in fact conspired to murder Kebble and the others. But there was little they were able to say about Agliotti. Instead they gave evidence that they were given instructions by Clinton Nassif, Kebble’s former head of security.

Headlined, “The bumbling assassins” by the local media, their evidence read more like a John Cleese comedy than a murder mystery. In fact their evidence alone could be used to make a movie. For example, their getaway car broke down twice, and they panicked when they saw the headlights of Kebble’s car behind them, thinking they were being followed. When it came to firing the fatal shot, the story goes the Schultz’s gun failed to fire twice.

The Judgement

On November 25, 2010 Glenn Agliotti was acquitted on all charges against him. Judge Frans Kgomo said there was no prima facie case against Agliotti and he was free to go.

“The one witness who could have connected the accused (to the crimes)… is Nassif,” the judge said, and “unfortunately when the totality of the evidence is taken into consideration – he failed dismally.”

-

-
